Hi! I'm Katie, the face behind the camera at Spellman Photography. You will almost always see me with a cup of coffee in hand (or tea if I'm trying to kick my caffeine addiction) and mascara smudged below my left eye. I began my journey in photography over 7 years ago, when I started dating my now-husband, Aaron. Aaron began Spellman Photography in 2005. At the time, he was fresh out of college and pretty darn good with a camera. He worked closely with the Woodward-Granger CSD and primarily shot seniors and weddings.
In 2009, when we started dating, he began showing me the ropes of how to use a camera. For me, it was the perfect mix of science and art. Years passed, my skills grew and in 2013, I left my corporate job in Des Moines to run our photography business full-time, while Aaron focused his energy on our farming business. These days, I work primarily with families to provide contemporary imagery that will stand the test of time. You will still see Aaron behind the camera occasionally. He is fantastic with lighting and is the lead for all our real estate photography work.
When I'm not shooting or editing, Iām spending time with our baby boy, Matthew, buzzing around town with Penny (our chocolate lab), shopping in the East Village district or attempting to control the weed patch I call a garden.
Most importantly, you should know that I am very passionate about what I do. I believe each family should have photographic keepsakes of their memories together. And I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I am happy to work with families to create custom packages based on their needs.
